Nelly is a Product Not a Narcissist

“Artist as a product” refers to the idea of treating an artist’s personal brand, image, and creative output as a marketable and sellable commodity. In this model, artists aren’t just recognized for their artwork, but for their entire persona, influencing how they’re marketed, perceived, and consumed by the public. This approach aligns with the trend of “celebrity branding,” where the artist’s unique style, story, and identity become as significant as their actual work.

Here’s how “artist as a product” typically manifests:

  1. Brand Identity: Artists develop a recognizable personal brand, creating a consistent “voice” across their works, social media, and public appearances. This brand can be quirky, controversial, luxurious, or even mysterious—whatever appeals to their target audience and sets them apart.
  2. Audience Engagement: Social media has turned many artists into influencers, where they build a fan base through direct engagement, giving fans a “behind-the-scenes” look or a personal connection to their creative journey. This makes the artist’s personality and daily life part of the appeal.
  3. Merchandising: An artist as a product often expands into merchandise or product lines, like limited-edition prints, fashion items, or even NFTs, using their brand to generate additional revenue streams outside their primary art medium.
  4. Cultural Influence: Artists often shape trends or styles by aligning with social issues, movements, or aesthetics that resonate with modern culture, further establishing them as a “product” people feel connected to on a cultural level.
  5. Multi-platform Presence: Today’s artists may extend into other media, such as podcasts, streaming platforms, or collaborations with brands, using their artistry to create a broader media presence that keeps their audience engaged across platforms.
  6. Collaborations and Sponsorships: Established artists often collaborate with companies or other creators, allowing both sides to leverage each other’s audiences. These partnerships further emphasize the artist’s brand as a sellable asset.

By positioning themselves as “products,” artists can cultivate larger, more loyal audiences, leverage diverse income streams, and gain a lasting impact across popular culture. This approach is especially common in the modern art and music industries, where the “brand” can sometimes outshine the art itself.

CONCLUSION

I signed the social media contract. I am a product now too.

Cinderella Saturdays

Nelly Furtado doesn’t have a song called “Cinderella” or an album directly based on the Cinderella story, but her career and music have elements that echo a modern Cinderella tale. Furtado grew up in a working-class, immigrant family in Canada, and she’s often described her journey in music as one where she worked her way up with determination and authenticity.

Her success story resonates with a Cinderella-like arc: she started out as a young girl with big dreams, putting in hard work and rising to international fame with her unique voice and style. Songs like “Powerless (Say What You Want)” and “Try” reflect themes of resilience, self-worth, and empowerment—qualities often celebrated in the Cinderella narrative, though told in her own distinctive, grounded way.

It All Comes Back

Time bends and stretches,
like the tides of the sea,
What was once lost,
now returns to me.

The whispers of love,
the shadows of pain,
Circles within circles,
we dance in the rain.

The years pass like rivers,
carrying dreams and regret,
But each moment, each feeling,
I have not forgotten yet.

The heart is a compass,
its needle so true,
It all comes back,
like the sun breaking through.

Another Knight

The “Another Night” TikTok trend is all about using nostalgic or emotional music—like the 90s hit “Another Night” by Real McCoy—to share moments that are funny, relatable, or a bit dramatic. The idea is to show something or someone that keeps popping up in your life, making you feel like you’re having “another night” dealing with the same situation. It could be anything from someone who won’t stop texting you, to situations where you find yourself making the same mistake, or even pets that demand attention every night!

The key to the trend is combining the catchy “Another Night” song with clips that capture a feeling of repetition, whether it’s romantic, comedic, or sentimental. This lets people connect with the humor and nostalgia of going through life’s little (and sometimes big) routines.

The Sinj Knights (or Alka Knights of Sinj) are the participants in an annual event called Alka, a traditional Croatian knightly tournament held in Sinj, Croatia. The Alka is a centuries-old competition dating back to 1715, held each August to commemorate the victory of the local people over the Ottoman Empire. During the tournament, knights, dressed in historic attire, ride horses and aim lances at a small metal ring (the alka), scoring points based on where they strike the ring.

The Sinj Knights, or alkari, represent Croatian heritage, and becoming a knight for this event is a great honor. The Alka has been recognized by UNESCO as an example of intangible cultural heritage, celebrating the spirit, history, and culture of the Sinj region.
